Cuban goalkeeper Raiko Arozarena has joined Forward Madison FC on a season-long loan from the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL Championship, the club announced on Tuesday.

On the other end of the deal, Madison will send goalie Phil Breno to the Rowdies, also for the remainder of the 2022 campaign.

Arozarena, 24, has made four starts for the Rowdies this year, where he served as a backup to CJ Cochran. In the previous three seasons he played for Mexican clubs. He also played for the Cuban U20 national team. He is the brother of Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena.

Breno, 26, has made 13 starts for the Mingos in 2022. The move is a return to the championship, the second tier of American football, for Breno, who previously played for Charleston Battery.

“As terribly sad as leaving Madison, this business is about progress,” Breno said in a text message to Madison365. “I look forward to testing my skills against some of the best players in the league on a daily basis!”

Backup guard Parker Smith started Madison’s win over Northern Colorado last weekend. The fourth-placed Mingos return to the field on Saturday as they host South Georgia Tormenta.
