The Hawaii Island Humane Society wants to educate and celebrate pet owners this holiday season.
“We talked about doing an event for the community that is rooted in education and giving people resources and tools to keep pets in families,” said CEO Lauren Nickerson.
This weekend, HIHS will be hosting a community event for pets and their owners with the aim of strengthening the bonds between humans and animals and promoting responsible pet ownership.
HIHS will offer one free microchip for 100 pets and can also check current microchips to make sure they are up to date.
“About nine out of ten lost animals never make their way home, so it’s critical to microchip and make sure it’s on record with up-to-date information,” Nickerson said. “With the fireworks coming on, the animals are scared and we don’t want lost animals to stay in the shelter longer than necessary. “
Pet owners will also have access to free enrichment food, supplies and toys, as well as expertise on how best to keep pets happy and healthy at home.
“We want to show people that you don’t need a lot of money or time to do enrichment activities with their pets,” Nickerson said. “We hope we can provide opportunities for people to learn little things they can do to make a big difference in their pets’ lives.”
HIHS will host the event at the Animal Community Center in Kailua-Kona from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and at the Keaau Refuge from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
HIHS also offers special in-time adoption rates for the holidays from Friday December 17 through Sunday December 19, as well as Friday December 24.
Adoption fees for all pets will be waived if adopters spend $ 75 or more at the Humane Society‘s retail store. All the benefits will flow to human society.
HIHS will have at least 50 dogs and 25 cats ready for adoption.
Interested parties should submit an adoption application on hihs.org by 10 a.m. on Friday, December 17.
