PUHI – Ryan Pawsling, Moloa’a Mike No. 9, and Squishy await your arrival at the Kaua’i Humane Society this week, when pet adoption fees are reduced to $0 and $25.
The two cats and the dog are three of nearly 200 animals currently housed at the nonprofit on Kaumuali’i Highway in Puhi. The low-fee adoption period, which runs from May 2 through May 15, is part of the Bissell Pet Foundation’s annual national “Empty the Shelters” event.
These initiatives are a big help for shelters, according to KHS executive director Nicole Schafer Crane.
“Where the populations are really high, they will show up and offer an event to help the shelters, to help them cull some animals to make room,” she said.
Last September, KHS transported nearly 200 animals to Seattle due to overcrowding.
Cats, dogs, puppies and kittens can be adopted for $25 during Empty Shelters. Senior pets – cats and dogs over 7 years old – can be adopted free of charge.
Standard KHS rates are $50 for adult pets, $25 for seniors, and $100 for puppies and kittens. All are neutered or neutered and come with up-to-date vaccinations, dewormers, flea and tick prevention products and microchips.
KHS is one of more than 275 participating shelters in 45 states and Canada, according to a press release from the Bissell Pet Foundation.
The non-profit organization says its Empty the Shelter event has helped 83,055 pets across the United States and Canada find homes since its inception in 2016.
“We’re running several free spaying/neutering clinics for cats, as well as our regular low-cost spaying/neutering clinics” in May, she said.
