Synchrony brings employees together for a three-day global diversity experience

The global event, which is hybrid for the first time, supports the company’s new way of working, allowing employees to participate in person in a forum in the washington d.c. Region; in a Synchrony hub in one of seven cities, including its Stamford, Connecticut Headquarter; or virtually.

Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Member of Congress Joyce Beaty (OH-03) and Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Corporate Responsibility of Synchrony Michael Matthews kicked off the event on Monday, welcoming employees who participated in a meaningful learning experience focused on addressing equity issues to better understand the root causes of outcome disparities.

As a result of the discussion, hundreds of employees volunteered for a community service initiative called “Synchrony’s Great Giveback” in conjunction with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) and non-profit Fairfax Volunteer, assembling 10,000 empowerment backpacks with school supplies for underserved primary school students. These school essentials will be handed out next month at PGCPS’ “Back 2 School Drive & Dash” event for students and their families. President of the Synchronie Foundation Denise Yap also featured PGCPS Associate Superintendent of Student Services, Dr. Elizabeth Faison with a $10,000 grant to support local schools.

The Synchrony Global Diversity Experience

The theme of this year’s event, Think Forward – Beyond All Boundaries, emphasizes that understanding the past is essential to thinking differently and continuing to advance equity, diversity and inclusion.

During the Global Diversity Experience, Synchrony employees at all levels, from the call center to the board, will hear multiple keynotes and panel discussions, including conversations with Brian Doubles, DJ Casto, Director human resources of Synchrony, chairman and co-CEO of Ariel Investments. Melody HobsonLisa Ling, executive producer and host of CNN’s “This is Life,” and Lisa Kenney, CEO of Reimagine Gender, as well as various Synchrony executives.

Workshop activities include:

  • Factality, the game: An interactive experiential learning session that simulates real-life experiences of structural inequality, played with diverse characters who encounter a series of fact-based advantages and limitations based on the intersection of their race, class, gender, sexual orientation , faith, ability and age .
  • Unleash the neurodiverse superpowers: An immersive simulation that allows participants to experience first-hand the strengths and challenges of the most common neurodiversities, using real business scenarios. The program is designed to help employees support the many ways people learn, think and interact and to support a culture of mental well-being.
  • Reinventing the genre: A deep dive into the gender spectrum and the biases, assumptions and privileges associated with it. This session will explore the rapidly changing gender landscape and provide practical tools to encourage inclusion.

Advancing a culture of inclusion and well-being for all

To continue to grow over the long term, Synchrony views equity, diversity and inclusion as a strategic business imperative, beginning with the support of Synchrony’s leadership team, board members and employee engagement at all levels of the company.
